A FLAG could be flown above the city to mark International Women's Day and 100 years since women were first given the right to vote.

Oxford City Council will consider a request for a specially-designed flag to fly above Oxford during a centenary festival next year.

Women over the age of 30 were given the right to vote in 1918 following the passing of the Representation of the People Act.

A festival will run from February 24 to March 11 in honour of the 100th anniversary.

The flag, which is currently being designed, will be in suffragette colours of purple, white and green.

It would be flown above Town Hall or Carfax Tower.

City councillor for Carfax, Ruthi Brandt, has made the request and hoped it could become an annual occurrence on March 8 from 2019 onwards.

The council will consider flying any flag on request.

The flag of West Papua has been flown above the Town Hall every year since 2007 on request of exiled West Papuan and Oxford resident Benny Wenda.

In November, the Transgender Pride flag was flown to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance, honouring those who had been killed or who had taken their own life because they chose to live as their preferred gender.

Last year Abingdon Town Council voted not to fly the Pride flag this June.

Oxford's city executive board will consider the request on Monday.
