A LIBRARY will comprise more than 20,000 images by a celebrated scholar of vernacular architecture at an Oxford university.

Oxford Brookes University will host the Paul Oliver Vernacular Architecture Library (POVAL) collection in its main library.

The institution, and the Oxford Mail, marked the death of Mr Oliver MBE, who lived in Shipton-under-Wychwood, in August.

Mr Oliver, who taught at various institutions during his career including Oxford Brookes, was an expert in vernacular architecture, producing the monumental Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World.

He was also a world-renowned expert on the blues.

The launch of Mr Oliver’s imagery will take place on Wednesday, October 18, between 2pm and 4.30pm at the university’s Headington Campus in the library.

Admission is free.

Dr Marcel Vellinga, a POVAL trustee, said: "It is very sad that Paul was not able to see the finished image library, however it is a fitting tribute to him and an important part of his legacy, which also lives on through his publications, his collections and the teaching programmes he helped establish and contributed to at Oxford Brookes.”
