A hotel providing Oxfordshire's main rescue centre for evacuees fleeing the floods has filled up.

This morning 154 pensioners and flooded residents were safely inside rooms at the Holiday Inn Express, near the Kassam Stadium, in Oxford.

Peter Male, of St John Ambulance, said: "The hotel is currently full. There will be extra capacity later should it be required, but of course there is always room in the emergency rest centre at the stadium."

None of the evacuees have been taken ill, but a few have been treated for dehydration.

Over the weekend around 50 people were evacuated to the hotel, which has become Oxfordshire County Council's emergency planning department's central rescue centre, but that number has trebled.

Many of the new evacuees are elderly residents from Meadow View care home in Standlake who arrived yesterday afternoon and others turned up late last night.

But some evacuees from Cygnet Court, in Abingdon, may be allowed to return to their homes later today.

A family which fled the floods in a caravan is now using the hotel's car park as makeshift home.

Mr Male added: "Everything is still running very smoothly. But it is a waiting game at the moment. We are waiting to see what happens today and what advice there is from the Environment Agency."
