ONE of Oxfordshire's oldest residents has died.

William Dent Robinson, who was three weeks from his 106th birthday, died peacefully in his sleep earlier this month.

The Blewbury resident was the sole surviving member of the original staff of St Birinus School.

The war hero a break from teaching to serve in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War including taking part in the D-Day landings and being awarded the Legion d'honneur by the French Government.

He resumed teaching at St Birinus in 1946 where he oversaw the Geography Department and was also acting Headmaster for a year and Deputy Headmaster for two years.

He lived in Blewbury for 75 years and was a keen amateur meteorologist and member of the John Betjeman Society.

The funeral for Mr Robinson will be held at noon on Tuesday January 2 at the South Oxfordshire Crematorium, Garford.
