It could cost £35 to park in Oxford for a day after city councillors approved a parking charging rise as part of its budget.

All of the city's car parks - apart from Oxpens - will see rises throughout the week with some jumping by more than 200 per cent.

The price of parking - for more than eight hours on a Saturday - in the city's Worcester Street and Gloucester Green car parks has jumped to £35, compared to £31.50 currently.

Charges for the city council’s Headington and St Leonard’s car parks will also increase to £2 for up to an hour in April, despite Lib Dem councillors staging a last ditch attempt to get them stopped.

Oxford City Council approved its 2018/19 budget last night and formally signed off the increases.

The largest rise will see parking for 4-6 hours in the Union Street car park - currently £4.80 - jump to £15.

Councillor Ed Turner, the council’s board member for finance, said: “We have also decided to increase city centre and suburban car park charges.

"Of course we understand representations saying we should not do this, but essentially we are in a position where either we need to raise these charges, or we need to hike up other fees and charges, notably those of the Park and Ride car parks, or we need to cut other services.”

Dr Turner also said it will spend £5m over 2018/19 to buy homes which will be used by families who had been at risk of homelessness.
