DON'T tell your partner: Oxford has just been named as the most adulterous city in the entire country.

With an estimated 12,800 adulterers, about nine per cent of our city's population is apparently cheating on their partner.

This is according to 'the official Infidelity Index 2018', compiled by - surprise, surprise! - IllicitEncounters.com, a dating website which explicitly encourages married men and women to have affairs (using its services).

Oxford has earned the dubious honour of first place in the ranking just ahead of Gloucester, where IllicitEncounters says 8.05 per cent of the adult population is cheating.

The most adulterous town in the country is Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, while the most faithful town is Wigan in Greater Manchester.

Oxford has for some reason shot up in the charts from its position in last year's table at sixth.

Website spokesman Christian Grant said: "We know what you’ve been up to, Oxford. In-between your boat races and world-class education there’s a dark underworld full of lies, deceit and salacious affairs.

"Whether this has an adverse effect on anyone’s studies, or the general reputation of Oxford, remains to be seen, but it’s a tag that we think they’ll quickly want to be rid of, especially given the city’s reputation and esteem.

"And it seems as if this mentality has spread to nearby Gloucester, as they’re not very far behind. It seems that this particular part of the UK has a lot of work to do."
