WALKERS, riders and cyclists have been urged to record historic countryside routes before they are lost forever.

If lesser known country walkways are not officially recorded by January 1, 2026, they will be extinguished from the county council's 'definitive map'.

Countryside campaigners have called for people in Oxfordshire to attend a training day to learn how to trace historical documents and prove the existence of public rights of way yet to be officially recorded.

The British Horse Society, the Ramblers Society and Open Spaces Society have called for local knowledge to preserve once-trodden paths for future generations.

The paths may already appear on Ordnance Survey maps but if they are recorded by January 2026 they won't be included on official maps in the future.

The Oxfordshire training day will take place in Chipping Norton on May 12 - meet in Burford Road at 9am and the organisers asked volunteers to bring laptops and Ordnance Maps of their local area if possible.
