COTSWOLD Wildlife park is welcoming a fitting new arrival just days away from celebrating 'Lemur Week',

The zoological park, in West Oxfordshire, has officially unveiled the latest arrival to the park - a collared lemur.

The primate team announced the birth yesterday after the young lemur was born last month to parents Anais and Varika.

Visitors can now see the youngster in the Madagascar exhibit where he is currently clinging to his mum for the first few months of his life.

Natalie Horner, deputy section head of primates at the park, said: "On May 5 we discovered that our female Collared Lemur, Anais, had given birth that very morning.

"Anais is an experienced mum so did brilliantly during the delivery and was already cleaning the baby up ready for its first feed.

"Lemur babies only weigh around 80g when first born but are able to cling to their mum’s fur and clamber around to find the best feeding position."

The keepers are currently just observing the animals but allow the baby's development up to its mum and just check they are bonding well.

The baby lemur is yet to be named but visitors will be able to vote for a name, and get stuck into activities, during Lemur Week next week.

The youngster is currently spending its days feeding and sleeping whilst clinging on to its mum, before it will start to gain independence in a few months time.

Ten year's ago the Park’s Lemur exhibit, Madagascar, was unveiled and was the brainchild of Jamie Craig, Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park.

He said: "It is great to have a birth in the group, most lemurs live in small family groups so it is nice to see their interaction when there is a new arrival.

"Babies are always a fantastic thing to have around the park, its great for us and the visitors."
