NEW speed bumps outside a village pub are set to get the go-ahead next week.

Council officers have advised that three pairs of 'speed cushions' are installed along 250m of New Yatt Road in North Leigh, near Witney, south west of the junction with Green Lane.

Oxfordshire County Council said the proposal will be used to ‘mitigate concerns over road safety and the wider adverse impact of traffic on residents and road users, in particular pedestrians’.

A new housing estate will be built there shortly.

Thames Valley Police has not objected to the proposal and officers said they were satisfied the design complied with Department for Transport advice.

Three residents said formally in a consultation they were opposed to the cushion installation.

They said they were worried about increased noise, pollution and that cushions could damage some vehicles.

They suggested that vehicle-activated signs, chicanes, gateway signing or a 20mph speed limit would be better.

But the council said it was ‘highly unlikely’ that noise or vehicle emissions would increase as traffic passes over them.

It said: “It is acknowledged that maintenance of speed cushions can sometimes be an issue but providing the initial construction is to a good standard, such schemes have not, in the main, proved problematic in this respect.”

County council cabinet member for environment Yvonne Constance is set to approve the plans in a public meeting at County Hall, Oxford, from 10am on Thursday.
