A FUN alternative to hitting up the local tourist hotspots this sunny season – whilst racking up a couple of the recommended five a day – is heading to one of the many pick-your-own farms scattered around the county.

Peach Croft Farm near Radley and Abingdon, pictured here, offer a pick-your-own adventure for seven different berries, four different types of peas, potatoes and asparagus, which is available until mid-June.

Rectory Farm based in Stanton St John, is another on the list in the county and boasts almost 45 acres of land for customers to trail through and pick fresh fruit and vegetables.

The team said that children taking part helps them ‘really understand where their food comes from by touching and seeing not from a textbook'. They add: "There is plenty of room for the children to get plenty of exercise while doing it and they really can’t get into too much difficulty - though occasionally some get lost, temporarily, in the maze of fields."

Other farms where customers are able to harvest for themselves in Oxfordshire include Medley Manor Farm in Binsey, Millets Farm near Abingdon, Q Gardens, The Old Farm Shop in Abingdon and Sotwell Manor Fruit Farm.

But the fun doesn’t stop when the asparagus and berry season is over: pumpkins and Christmas Trees are also available to hand pick in Autumn.
