SWIMMERS can finally dive back into Abingdon's much-loved outdoor pool after it reopened following a £1.3m refurbishment.

Abbey Meadow outdoor pool was officially re-opened by Vale of White Horse District Council’s chairman Monica Lovatt at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday.

The pool now boasts a beach-style sloping entrance and all changing rooms have been modernised.

Before building work started last summer, there were two pools at the site: a small pool for young children and a bigger and deeper pool for stronger swimmers.

The wall dividing them was knocked through – which has left a large L-shaped pool with an accessible entrance at one end.

Vale council leader Roger Cox said: “The pool looks fantastic and I am absolutely delighted we have been able to provide this outstanding facility in Abingdon for residents and visitors alike.

“Abbey Meadow and the pool’s setting next to the Thames makes it uniquely attractive to families wanting a beautiful and safe place to relax and have fun and our investment means it can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

The entrances to the pool and the changing room at the Abbey Close site have been redesigned to make them more accessible and there is automated lighting throughout the building to make it more energy efficient.

A new movement sensor at its entrance makes it easier to access.

Swimmers will also be able to use coin-operated lockers at the pool for the first time.

Work start on renovating the pool last September and it was completed by specialist swimming pool builders Vincent Stokes.

Councillor Alice Badcock, cabinet member for community services said: “The changes made to the pool make it a truly inviting place for people to spend time and get active.

“With the rebuilding of the pool and the play area nearby, along with the other improvements we are making will really help to give this much-loved area a new lease of life.”

The pool is open from 9am until 6pm.

Adults-only swimming sessions run from 9am until 11am on weekdays.
