ORGANISERS of a protest against Donald Trump’s visit to the UK next month have said they have seen a ‘surge of interest’ in the wake of a new US immigration policy which sees migrant children separated from their parents at the border with Mexico.

Ian Mckendrick, from the Oxford Stand Up To Trump Coalition revealed that numbers for tonight's planned protest event have swelled following media coverage highlighting the hundreds of minors now being housed in US detention centres.

He said: “People are angry at the revelations of migrant children and infants being removed from their parents by US border guards and placed in holding cages for days in great distress.

“This harks back to the days of slavery and the removal of native American children from their families.

Mr Mckendrick added: “It is clear that Trump is prepared to stoke up racism to justify the human rights abuses being sanctioned by his administration.”

Mr Trump has since announced he has signed an order to stop children being separated from their families.

Mr Trump's visit on July 13, his first official visit to the UK, is expected to attract wide-spread protests across the country, including here in Oxford.

The Oxford Rally Against Trump will meet in the Assembly Room at Oxford Town Hall tonight from 7pm.

A number of guest speakers have been organised for the event including chair of the Abortion Rights Campaign, Kerry Abel; Chair of Oxford Palestine Solidarity Campaign, David Hillman; and Naima Omar from Stand Up to Racism.

Oxford Stand Up To Trump Coalition will also be organising a second protest in July to coincide with the President's visit.
