‘CRUMBLING’ and controversial speed humps on a busy road in to Bicester have come under fire once again.

The speed humps along Middleton Stoney Road are subject to an urgent call for action from Oxfordshire county councillor for the area Les Sibley.

He is demanding that repairs to be carried out as the traffic-calming measures have become ‘a hazard’ to road users with more than 10 of them crumbling under the pressure on the busy route.

Mr Sibley said: “The speed humps have completely deteriorated as they just can’t cope with the shear volume of traffic.

“With cars and HGVs hitting the same spot each time they are just crumbling away.

“Close to Villiers Road the humps have been like this for over a year.

"It is not acceptable, they are dangerous.”

The councillor said he had been calling for repairs for more than a year as the road continued to worsen, but to no avail.

Middleton Stoney is one of the main roads into the town centre that runs alongside the new Kingsmere estate.

The speed humps were installed by Kingsmere developer Countryside Properties, and are due to be 'adopted' by the highways team at Oxfordshire County Council.

However Mr Sibley said the council would not accept them in their current state, adding: "We don’t want a substandard job.”

The humps first came under fire from councillors and residents in 2014 when a consultation on the idea was met with mixed reviews.

Many said the plans were not in line with the way Bicester was growing, though others felt something was needed to slow traffic on the busy road.

The humps were eventually installed in January 2016 following approval from Oxfordshire County Council.

Mr Sibley said the had quickly deteriorated, leaving edges completely crumbling away.

A Countryside Properties spokeswoman said: “The speed bumps along Middleton Stoney Road are our responsibility until Oxfordshire Country Council take on the ongoing maintenance of them.

“The bumps are coming to the end of their two year maintenance period and we have instructed Breheny to undertake the remedial works.

"The works, alongside the crossing works, are to be undertaken by the end of July.”
