Inmates at HMP Bullingdon could be given in-cell phones
INMATES at Bullingdon could be given in-cell telephones to reduce the flow of mobiles being smuggled in and calm tensions among prisoners.
The Justice Secretary David Gauke has revealed plans to spend £7m on in-cell phones and digital kiosks to speed up arranging visits.
An inspection of HMP Bullingdon last year found that illegal mobile phones were regularly found by guards.
The report also found that prisoners had good access to telephones during the day but could not make calls in the evening when friends and family were more likely to be available.
Mr Gauke said this sort of frustration led to heightened tensions and fuelled the demand for illicit mobile phones.
