Christian Sinkinson, of the Wallingford-based photography studio More Than Images, took these images as events unfolded.

He said he understood the grenade had been pulled out of the river by a person magnet fishing.

Thames Valley Police spokesman Gareth Ford-Lloyd said the grenade was believed to date from Second World War and had been pulled out of the river.

When officers arrived it was located on a beach not far from Wallingford Bridge.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion safely and there was no danger to the wider public.

The cordon has now been lifted.
