CITY councillors will be asked to support a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal at a meeting next week.

Green Party group leader Craig Simmons will urge fellow councillors to formally back the motion which would mean the council 'liaises' with the People's Vote campaign on ways it can promote its petition.

Mr Simmons will also ask for the council to write to city MPs Anneliese Dodds and Layla Moran asking them to support a second vote. Ms Moran, a Liberal Democrat, has already confirmed she supports one.

Mr Simmons will mention recent warnings from Oxford-based companies, including BMW.

He will say: "This council notes the recent Chequers Statement issued on July 6, 2018 (and the closest indication yet of what a final deal might look like), has managed to alienate both Remainers and Brexiteers alike."

Witney MP Robert Courts resigned from a junior Government post on Sunday after he said he could not support Theresa May's current proposals.

Oxford City councillors will be asked to support Mr Simmons' motion next Monday.
