CONCERNS continue to surround the potential cost of policing the recent visit of President Donald Trump.

Security for the US leader's four-day tour of the UK - which included dinner at Blenheim Palace and tea with the Queen - is expected to rack up a hefty bill.

Current estimates put the cost for policing the event between £8m and £10m - but some officers covering the palace visit suggested it may even exceed £10m.

Thames Valley police and crime commissioner Anthony Stansfeld, prior to the visit, spoke about the cost to police in response to a letter from Oxford city councillor Tom Hayes.

He said: "It is largely based on the need for security which we would offer any head of state visiting our area...

"However it is made more difficult and expensive by the very protests you yourself are going to take part in and encourage...

"We will not know the exact cost to Thames Valley Police until after the event. However, be assured I will be making every effort at ministerial level to ensure this, and other costs such as the two Royal weddings in our area this year, are compensated for properly."

Mr Stansfeld's office did not respond to a request for an updated comment.

West Oxfordshire district councillor Laetisia Carter, who attended the protest, said: "The PCC told people not to go to Blenheim and protest; I would argue he's missing the point of why we were out there. We are in imposed austerity and policing this visit is going to cost approximately £10m. This was all about not rolling out the red carpet for someone who represents such inhumane policies."
