A 17-YEAR-OLD boy remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbing of a dog walker in Abingdon yesterday.

A woman in her 50s was stabbed in Abingdon on Thursday morning, while walking her dog in the Boxhill Park area. 

The incident took place at around 10.30am, when the victim was approached by a young male in woodland near Clifton Drive.

The woman was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital but the Oxford Mail understands she has since been discharged.

Earlier police said that the woman was stabbed once in the stomach after a hand was put over her mouth.

The offender then fled through the wooded area in the direction of Clifton Drive.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area around Boxhill Park.

A scene-watch was put in place in the area of Clifton Drive, Kingston Close and The Motte while investigations began.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Ali Driver, of Force CID at Abingdon police station said: "Incidents such as this are exceedingly rare, and people in the area are likely to see an increased number of police officers while our investigations continue.

“I am urging anybody who was in the area this morning between 10am and 11am who believes they may have witnessed this incident, or who recognises the description of the offender, to contact us on 101, quoting URN 434 (19/7).

“Likewise, if you see anybody matching this description, do not approach him, but call 999 immediately, or approach one of our officers in the area.”
