THERE certainly wont be fools and horses taking part in the Oxford Memory walk but a well-known face of the comedy sitcom will be.

Actress Sue Holderness, best known for her role as Marlene Boyce in Only Fools and Horses, is calling on people of Oxfordshire to join her for the annual event.

Ms Holderness will take to the streets with hundreds of others in the fight against dementia for the Alzheimer's Society Oxford Memory Walk on Sunday, September 16.

She will be doing it in honour of her mother who passed away from a dementia-related illness in 2006.

The 69-year-old said: "I am so happy to take part in the Oxford Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s Society and I encourage anyone who can to join me by signing up today.

"Memory Walk is a fun day out for family, friends and community to unite against dementia and raise funds for such an important cause."

So far, almost 1,000 people have signed up for the Oxford Memory Walk in honour of their loved ones.

This equates to almost one participant for every nine people living with dementia in Oxfordshire.

Ms Holderness added: "One person develops dementia every three minutes in the UK. There is no cure for the condition and it turns lives upside down – I know this from personal experience.

"I am walking for several friends and family and in loving memory of my darling mum, who I miss every day. Supporting Memory Walk is a great opportunity for people from all backgrounds to get together and unite against dementia."

Last year's memory walk through Oxford pulled in almost 2,000 walkers and raised more than £180,000 to fund research and support for those affected by dementia and their families.

Alzheimer’s Society operations manager for Oxford Linda Goddard said: "Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer. Of the top ten causes of death, dementia is the only one we can’t prevent, cure or even slow down, and funding for dementia research is still far too low.

"Dementia devastates lives, but every pound raised through Memory Walk will help us provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition.

"We are calling on people with dementia, family, friends and teams from across Oxfordshire to unite against dementia this autumn. Walk with us at Oxford Memory Walk to help defeat dementia."
