A SCHOOLGIRL sold homemade cakes and lemonade to her neighbours to raise money for amputees in Sri Lanka.

The Manor Preparatory School in Abingdon has said it is proud of Year 6 pupil Grace Maharaja, whose efforts have raised £142 for the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society.

The charity is based in Sri Lanka and creates and fits artificial limbs for children and adults who have lost theirs due to injuries caused by landmines, other explosive devices, accidents and illnesses.

Grace, 11, set up a cake and lemonade stall at the end of her driveway in Kingston Bagpuize, then sold refreshments door to door with her brother and a friend when footfall dwindled.

Her fundraising will cover the cost of giving two Sri Lankan children a limb each.

Grace’s mother Yuvani said the society's vice president is a 'close family friend' and the family are long-standing supporters of its cause.

She said: "We were extremely delighted with Grace’s decision to donate to this very worthy cause.

"Her contribution has made a significant difference to the lives of two children.

"We are so very proud of Grace’s initiative, conviction and for following through on her idea.”

Grace is also writing and illustrating a collection of short stories for children who don’t like to read, and hopes to sell it via Amazon to benefit a charity.
