One of the country's up-and-coming vocal ensembles, Stile Antico, will be returning to the Sheldonian Theatre to celebrate the launch of their second CD, Heavenly Harmonies, at 8pm on Wednesday.

Two members of this group, twins Helen and Kate Ashby, have a particular affinity with Oxford, having worked but a stone's throw from the Sheldonian in Blackwell's music shop, Broad Street, during their gap year.

Stile Antico is a term used to describe music from the 16th century to the 20th which is historically conscious. Most great composers of the Baroque period wrote in this style, most particularly Bach. The ensemble took this name when a group of talented young Oxford musicians decided to sing together in 2001, as it best suited the style of music they aimed to perform. They are now considered one of the most original and exciting new performers in this field and have amassed several prestigious prizes. They work without a conductor, each contributing artistically to their repertoire of music, which ranges from the English Tudor composers to Flemish and Spanish schools and early Baroque.

Their Oxford programme is made up of Thomas Tallis's beautifully simple psalm settings from Archbishop Parker's Psalter for the Reformed Church of England, interspersed with some of Byrd's most powerful recusant Catholic motets.

As this concert celebrates their new CD, concert goers will be able to buy a copy, which features all the works being performed, two weeks ahead of its release. They will also get a chance to meet the group in person. Speaking for the entire group, Helen Ashby said: "It's always a delight to be able to perform in Oxford where we have so many fond memories of the group's early years."

Tickets for this performance can be booked by ringing 01865 333581.
