A MOTORCYCLIST who died yesterday following a crash on the A420 at Buckland has been named as Norman Clayson, 51, of Butts Road, Faringdon.

Last night, calls were made for action to improve safety at the junction on the road between Faringdon and Kingston Bagpuize.

Mr Clayson died as he was being taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital after his black Honda motorcycle was in collision with a silver Citroën C5, with French plates.

A police spokesman said the Citroën was pulling out of Buckland Road when the crash happened at 5.15am.

The driver, a 51-year-old from Witney, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The road was closed between Faringdon and Kingston Bagpuize until shortly after noon.

Yesterday, Heather Broom, headteacher at Buckland Primary School, said: "It is the same junction where several accidents have happened. There is huge concern from parents because that junction is used by them on a daily basis.

"I had a letter from an eight-year-old child regarding our school travel plan just before Christmas who asked if we could make that junction a bit safer."

She added: "I think it is a particularly dangerous and very busy junction and something does need to be done."

Police have said they are worried about the proportion of cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists killed on the county's roads last year compared with car drivers.

The A420 between Oxford and Swindon has been dubbed a "road to hell" due to the number of accidents there.

In October 2007, 47-year-old cyclist Christine Jones was killed in a collision between the Charney Bassett junctions.

A motorcyclist died in a collision at Watchfield in September, and in August, five pigs died after the lorry they were being transported in overturned at the junction with the A415 at Kingston Bagpuize.

Last August, Dr Thuli Whitehouse, 27, was given a suspended 51-week jail sentence after being convicted of causing the death of father-of-two Robert Murrell by dangerous driving on the A420 at Appleton.

Swindon schoolgirl Charmaine Pearce, 15, died after being hit by a car near Cumnor, and 30-year-old Omar Bazi was killed near Tubney last December when the BMW he was travelling in was in a collision with a lorry.

A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council said: "Recent safety records at the Buckland junction show little cause for concern, but we are constantly reviewing the safety on all of our roads."

Police have appealed for witnesses who drove past the crash scene to contact Sgt Bill Sykes 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
