This warm, vibrant exhibition comprises 21 paintings in bold uncompromising colours by artist Fiona McClean. A former Oxfordshire resident, she now lives in the beautiful Drôme region of France. Her work is semi-abstract and through it she records everyday life in her adopted home, resulting in images that could only be drawn from the sun-baked Mediterranean.

McClean paints what she sees. This often results in her reworking and repainting pieces several times and, in the process, creating depth and texture that emphasise the tonal subtleties and differences of the colours she uses.

Socks is a view of the village in which she lives. The painting is executed, in the main, in greens, browns and ochres. And it is dominated by a tree in the foreground flanked by a jumble of village dwellings to the right and the rear. A line of washing under the tree draws the eye towards the houses. The line bears a row of socks in subtle greens and browns that almost, but don't quite, blend into the foliage.

Fountain at Saou (pictured) is a study of the centre of that village, again local to McClean, with the ubiquitous local cafe to the right of the picture. The whole is dominated by a spreading plane tree whose painted shadow creates a subtle shift between light and dark, causing soft browns and greens to melt into strong sunburnt vermilions, oranges and pinks.

The exhibition is at the Cherwell Boathouse restaurant, a cosy setting which demonstrates well how these strong, insistent paintings can and do work in a busy quasi-domestic setting.

The exhibition continues to the end of August and is open daily 10am-6pm.
