Cowley Road CCTV to go live today

Cowley Road is to finally get CCTV today, fully 15 years after advocates first raised the idea.

After years of campaigning, cameras - on the corners of Southfield Road, Manzil Way and Princes Street - will be switched on at 1pm.

The cameras, costing £40,000, will be managed by Thames Valley Police.

City councillor Saj Malik, executive member for community safety, said: "These cameras will assist in tackling alcohol-realated anti-social behaviour, drug misuse and dealing."

The cameras, which will be able to rotate 360 degrees, will cover Cowley Road from Temple Street to Howard Road.

Well Councillor Malik do not hold your breath if you are expecting a miracle because I doubt very much that it will happen. In fact you could find it worse than it was before the cameras were installed. As an aside, what is the value of a camera that swings 360 degrees when they are mounted on a wall.It is all hype. Lol.

It has been proven that CCTV does not deter crime (particularly the type of alcohol- related crime one assumes is the justification for this scheme) and is of very limited use in gaining a conviction due to poor image quality.

Along with sniffer dogs, hand swabbing and other heavy handed Police tactics used in and around this area, this scheme is yet another worrying sign of how NuLabour spend our tax money on attempting to control our every movement and nanny us at every turn.

My prediction is that any drug dealing, prostitution or other crime will simply be pushed further back into residential streets.

The council and police should prove that cctv is necessary and an effective crime prevention measure as well justifying the encroachment on personal freedoms before committing public money. They have not done this - probably because they can't.

The cameras have been installed as a two year trial. If the trial is conducted even handedly then at the end of two years they will see that they have been ineffective.

The No CCTV campiagn will continue to campaign against these cameras and to inform the public of the truth about CCTV.
