Michael Garrick, Gwilym Simcock (pictured), Stan Tracey, John Taylor, Nikki Iles. This is a list of some of the finest and most diverse jazz pianists in Britain today . . . and they’re all coming to the Holywell Music Room to give both concerts and workshop/masterclasses over the next few months. Dorothy Shaw, who is promoting these events with support from the PRS Foundation, has for a long time wanted to put on concerts where top pianists have the opportunity to play a good instrument in a good acoustic space. Too often jazz pianists have to perform on electronic keyboards which, although now remarkably precise, never have the same sound or response as a concert grand. The Holywell has both the instrument and the acoustics.

The first of this Contemporary Jazz Series, on Feb 1, featured Tom Cawley’s Curios and the extraordinary Yaron Herman. The others will be once a month starting with Michael Garrick, one of the great spirits of jazz innovation, in trio with Martin Hathaway and Paul Moylan this Sunday. Apart from the Stan Tracey concert, each will be preceded in the afternoon by a workshop. These are open to all proficient pianists with a working knowledge of jazz harmony who will have an opportunity to play, or to anyone who wishes to listen and observe.

The Stan Tracey concert on April 26, on the other hand, will be something special as he is appearing with his old musical partner Bobby Wellins whose playing has recently found new strength and passion. The workshop with Gwilym Simcock on March 15, which precedes a solo performance, is supported by Oxford University Faculty of Music, allowing free participation for all Oxford University Students.

Each concert is on a Sunday, and by mixing new talents like Simcock and Nikki Iles with more veteran figures of jazz piano, this series is a unique opportunity to hear, and learn from, some unique musicians playing in one of the finest, and most historic venues, in the city.
