FOUR illegal workers were arrested in a raid on a supermarket.

Immigration officers raided the Londis store in London Road, Headington, Oxford, on Tuesday – in an operation to see if staff were entitled to work in the UK.

The raid came after a tip-off, it emerged last night.

Four Indian men, aged between 21 and 36, were arrested for immigration offences.

One of the four was also arrested on suspicion of possessing a counterfeit Belgian passport and National Insurance card. Two of the men remain in immigration detention, awaiting removal from the country.

A third man, aged 24, was charged with fraud and ID Cards Act offences, and appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Oxford Crown Court on August 7.

The fourth man was granted immigration bail while the UK Border Agency gets travel documents to remove him.

The UK Border Agency said the store owner faced a fine of up to £40,000 unless he could prove the correct checks were carried out on the men.

Insp Dick Stratton, of the UK Border Agency, said: “We’re committed to removing people who have no right to be in the UK. As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. This operation should serve as a warning for those who break the law.”

Businesses who fail to carry out checks when employing migrant workersface fines of up to £10,000 per illegal employee.
