Flag to be raised in memory of King Alfred

The flag of the ancient kingdom of Wessex will fly from the top of St George’s Tower at Oxford Castle to mark King Alfred’s Day on Monday.

The celebration marks the 1,010th anniversary of his death and commemorates the history, culture and folklore of the county Wessex, which spans modern-day Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Berkshire and Somerset.

Great to see Alfred the Great being celebrated in Oxford - well done!

Makes a change from the usual politically correct attitudes we see elsewhere.

Come on Newsquest, please correct the headline - Arthur indeed!

Oxfordshire was never in Wessex, it was part of the Kingdom of Mercia. The River Thames was the boundary between Wessex and Mercia in these parts. You may be thinking of Occupied North Berkshire which was deviously incorporated into Oxfordshire in 1974.

Mr Patterson you are incorrect. The extent of the kingdom of Wessex is still disputed, but certainly included parts of Oxfordshire during some periods of its existence.

Wantage, which is now in Oxfordshire, was the birthplace of Alfred.
