Back again this Christmas at Headington is Oxford Harmony’s enjoyable evening of male close-harmony chorus singing.

Performing with them are The Great Western Chorus, from Bristol, a group well known in barbershop circles and beyond, having won the prestigious British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) championship seven times in 30 years and also performed at the London Coliseum and The Royal Albert Hall.

As winners last year, they went on to represent the UK in the US barbershop championships in Anaheim. The sound they produce, with a repertoire from Bach to barbershop, is said to be truly stunning, leaving audiences in no doubt why they are such regular championship winners.

Oxford Harmony is a relatively new chorus formed in Cumnor two years ago and now poised to take on the challenge of the BABS championship at its annual convention in 2010.

Singing a blend of traditional tunes, they entertain with songs old and new such as Shenandoah, The Beatles’ When I’m 64 and the humorous My Wife The Dancer.

Both groups are fronted by female chorus directors. Oxford’s director Kate Doherty (pictured with the group above) will be showing many aspects of her talent during the concert. The group’s last piece is evidently not to be missed – a show-stopper if ever there was one.

Supporting the all-male choruses are two female saxophone ensembles from St Helen and St Katharine School, in Abingdon, who will provide a pleasant balance to the evening with their blend of up-tempo and traditional music.

This is predicted to be an especially worthwhile evening’s entertainment all round, with a blend of old and young performers and a wide variety of songs and music to please all tastes.

The concert is on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 from www.headington.org/theatre or telephone 07502 334566.
