Opera Anywhere’s festive double bill, first seen two years ago, is at the Cornerstone, Didcot, on Sunday for two performances, and features a cast of professionals and local children.

The Selfish Giant, based on Oscar Wilde’s tale for children, is a one-act opera written by local teacher and composer Debbie Rose, and is a heart-warming story of a curmudgeonly giant who is transformed through a simple act of kindness.

The giant finds that his garden is permanently locked into winter after he banishes children from it, but when he lets them back in, spring returns, thawing the giant’s heart.

There’s also a poignant twist at the end. If you saw the show first time around, expect a few changes, including a new cast member – a pet dog, Flossie!

Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors continues the moving but uplifting mood with the tale of the young boy whose life is changed after he and his mother welcome three strangers into their home.

Amahl is played by 13-year-old Bethan Rose, a rising star from Abingdon who is Opera Anywhere’s latest ‘discovery’.

The roles of Amahl’s mother and the three visitors are taken by professional singers.

This beautiful tale is brought to life by Menotti’s extraordinarily innovative and evocative score.

This promises to be an inspirational mix of dancing, singing and glorious music, suitable for all the family and guaranteed to capture the festive spirit.

The double bill is at the Cornerstone, Didcot, at 2pm and 7.30pm on Sunday. Box office: 01235 515144 or visit www.cornerstone-arts.org. For more information about this and future Opera Anywhere productions, visit www.operaany where.com
