After hugely popular Christmas concerts at the Holywell Music Room in the past three years, Eclectica! is this year making two consecutive appearances.

So there is a good chance that everyone can get to hear this fascinating jazz/classical ensemble.

The brainchild of jazz guitarist Pete Oxley, this is a quartet with something of an all-star cast. On the jazz side, Pete is partnered by the virtuoso Swiss guitarist Nicholas Meier, who is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after player/composers on the London scene.

On the classical side, the cellist Bernard Gregor-Smith has a lifetime’s experience of playing at the highest levels and worked for many years with the world-famous Lindsay Quartet.

In recognition of his services to music, he has also recently been given the Freedom of the City of Sheffield.

Alongside him, the violinist Lizzie Ball brings both musical expertise – she has just released her first album – and also youth and striking enthusiasm. Eclectica! gives her the opportunity to step up to the microphone to prove her considerable talents as a vocalist and her increasing confidence as a jazz improviser. This year, the group have put together a new repertoire from sources as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Vittorio Monti and Rimsky-Korsakov, plus new jazz-orientated pieces by Oxley and Meier and, of course, as in previous years, a musical bow to the approach of Christmas. This has all been described as “a joyous night that will set you up for the festive season”.

In the new year, Eclectica! will be embarking on a nationwide tour to promote the release of a new album, And this is one of them . . .

In London they will be appearing at both Ronnie Scott’s and the Wigmore Hall to illustrate the truly diverse and eclectic nature of the music.

Eclectica! are at the Holywell Music Room tomorrow and Saturday. Tickets by telephone or online from the Oxford Playhouse or on 07974 561393.
