VOLUNTEERS pounded the streets of Witney to collect money for people devastated by the Haiti earthquake.

On Saturday, Witney Rotary Club collected £2,500 from outside Sainsbury’s, in Witan Way.

Collector John Milnes said: “The situation in Haiti is horrendous.

“Nobody can fail to be moved by the scenes of distress, confusion and utter hopelessness.

“This appeal is crucial to keep aid moving into the country and save more lives.

“It’s not just the earthquake that causes damage to lives – the aftermath can be equally devastating.”

Saturday’s collection was part of national Rotary Club appeal for donations.

David Fowler, president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, said: “All money raised for the Haitian earthquake will go towards vital aid.

“Hundreds of water survival boxes and aquaboxes are ready to be sent across to Haiti from the UK and Ireland.

“Several shelterboxes have already made it to the disaster zone, providing tents, clothing, blankets, and cooking utensils to the victims.

“To keep this relief effort going, Rotary members are mobilising to raise funds, offer donations, and help in any way that they can.

“We are receiving offerings which will support and enable victims to reclaim their lives.

“It is too early to tell just how long it will take to recover from this natural disaster. Haiti has been battered by storms previously, and much of the population is impoverished.

“Rotary members from the six Rotary clubs in Haiti are working together and, in some cases, providing shelter for others in their damaged homes. This is where Rotary International plays to its strengths with members working together across the world.”
