The son of an Oxford city councillor has been jailed for attacking a man and a 14-year-old boy.
Law student Omer Hussain was given two 12-month sentences, to run concurrently, after being found guilty of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Co-accused Afraz Iqbal, of Magdalen Road, wept as he was given a suspended sentence after being convicted of one charge of causing actual bodily harm.
Hussain, 20, of Cowley Road, is the son of Sabir Hussain Mirza, a Labour councillor and former chairman of Oxford Central Mosque.
Hussain and Iqbal were in a group which attacked an 18-year-old in East Oxford in October 2008. Three weeks later a 14-year-old Afghan boy was attacked by a gang in Cowley Marsh Park.
Both men denied the charges but were found guilty at a trial in January.
David Taylor, defending Hussain, told Reading Crown Court his client had worked on community projects. He added: “He has brought shame on his family and he knows that.”
Iqbal was given a 40-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 150 hours’ unpaid work and pay £500 compensation.
