Fans at the Kassam Stadium will give Oxfordshire’s troops a standing ovation tomorrow.

About 250 servicemen and women from the county’s military bases will be guests of honour at Oxford United’s game with Gateshead.

The club’s Support the Forces Day will see personnel from RAF Benson, Dalton Barracks in Abingdon and Bicester Garrison among the guests.

A minute’s applause will be held before kick-off and military representatives will create a guard of honour as the players emerge from the tunnel.

Last night, U’s chairman Kelvin Thomas said it would be a proud day for the U’s. He said: “As a club we felt it was important to acknowledge the fantastic work that all of our armed services do.

“We need to salute the true heroes – those who put their lives on the line and risk everything for their country.

“We have been in touch with as many of our local military bases as possible and given them tickets to come along with their families and enjoy a game of football.

“It will be a proud moment for us.”

Private Gurung Pradip, Corporal Chris Peacock and Pte Mike Padmore, of 3 Logistic Support Regiment, based at Dalton Barracks, visited the ground and met United players Kevin Sandwith, Jamie Cook and Matt Green.

Cpl Peacock, who will take his wife, Michelle, to the match, said: “It is a brilliant gesture by the club and it's nice to know Oxford United and its fans support what we are doing.

Matt Green said: “It is fantastic that we can show our support for the troops in this way.

“We hope as many people as possible come along with their families and enjoy a day away from all the hard work which comes with being in the armed forces.”
