A TEENAGER from Carterton was killed in a car crash on Tuesday evening.

Callum MacKinnon was the back-seat passenger of a blue Citroën C3 when it crashed into a tree along the B4020 Shilton Road, between Burford and Carterton at about 5.30pm. The car was travelling towards Carterton.

The 20-year-old male driver and the front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old man, were treated for minor injuries at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and later released.

Mr MacKinnon, who would have been 19 a week tomorrow, had played football for Witney United under-18s and had taken part in his first match with Cirencester Town development side last Saturday.

Friends described the 18-year-old’s two loves as football and friends.

Best friend Graeme Day, 18, of Carterton, said: “He was a typical boy who would go out with his mates all of the time — he loved his football and he loved his mates.”

Jade Cridland, 18, of Carterton, knew Mr MacKinnon since they went to Edith Moorhouse Primary School together at the age of five.

She said: “He was the most amazing lad you would ever meet.

“He was just a bit of a joker and loved to go out and wind everybody up.”

Miss Cridland said that Mr MacKinnon, lived in Carterton with his parents and two brothers, one older and one younger.

He had been due to attend a training session at Cirencester Town just an hour after he died.

Assistant coach Andy James said: “We were wondering where he was as Callum never missed a training session.

“Callum always had a smile on his face — he worked hard, trained hard and had everything going for him. Not one player disliked him — he got on with everyone.”

Former Carterton Community College pupil Mr MacKinnon was studying for a diploma in sport at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College and worked at the Burford Garden Company.

Geoff Cherrill, assistant headteacher at Carterton Community College, said: “Callum was a lovely genuine young man and a credit to his family.”
