New store bows to call to save trees

Mick Haines and other Marston residents expressed fears that Tesco planned to remove trees from outside the old Friar pub Mick Haines and other Marston residents expressed fears that Tesco planned to remove trees from outside the old Friar pub

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has put fears about the future of a Marston memorial tree to rest.

Rumours were circulating that trees outside the old Friars pub would be cut down as part of the site’s imminent transformation into a Tesco store.

One of the trees was planted on Armistice Day, 1950, to commemorate the people of Marston who died during the Second World War.

Tesco spokesman Maxine Crawford said: “The trees are not going to be removed, but some lopping is definitely required.

“If we were going to do anything with any of them we would always have a tree surgeon or someone with similar expertise.”

Planning permission was given earlier this year to turn the Old Marston Road pub into a Tesco Express shop, despite local opposition. There are several trees outside the pub, including the memorial tree, and they are on land controlled by the highway authority and outside Tesco’s ownership.

Local resident Mick Haines collected more than 4,400 signatures on a petition against the store being given planning permission.

He said: “They were put there for the dead soldiers. The trees should stay as they were put in.”

Four trees were planted around Marston in 1950. One near Crotch Crescent was for those who died while serving in the Navy, with two more at Marston Road for the Army and the Air Force. The final tree was planted at the corner of Marston Road and Old Marston Road for the Home Services.

Cromwell Close resident Josie Bridges, 86, lived in the area when they were planted.

She said: “The trees were planted in memory of the forces.

“I don’t know whether a lot of people know about them now, but I think the older people would be upset if they went. They bring back memories of the war.

“As long as they are not cut down, it is all right.”

Marston city councillor Mary Clarkson said: “All trees need to be pruned and if it is done in the right way, it is good for them.

“The concern is they would be cut in a way that a tree surgeon wouldn’t do.”

She said a plaque should be installed to mark the trees’ history.

Planning inspector Andrew Pykett granted permission for the store to go ahead in June. Despite opposition, he believed the effect of the store would be “limited”.

For a 60 year old tree, it doesn't look very substantial.

Is it the orignal one?

I wonder why all these Anti-Tesco-people are in this picture ?

May be, because they've nothing better to do, or is it- because they don't want more jobs in Marston ?

What sort of a councillor are you? These are not anti-Tesco they are anti another shop in an area where it is not needed.

Why should trees be felled when they are perfectly healthy and are an asset to the area.

Many people objected to the creation of a new supermarket because there is no need and, surely, councillors are supposed to represent the views of their constituents and protect their environ.

If you are a typical councillor it is no wonder that residents are ignored so blatantly and so often.

The headline is biased against Tesco because in the report it says that there never was a plan to remove the trees - only that pruning is necessary. Is the journalist making a feeble pun on 'bow' and 'bough' of a tree? It looks like a story planted (oh dear, bad puns are catching) by Johnny Cash and his band in the photo: a rumour invented to get an invented threat put into print for the benefit of whom? We can each make our mind up on that...

Sid a bit over the top there. Some anti-tesco person started a rumour (as fact) that Tesco would cut down the tree, it was jumped on by various others and became a crusade, that was never needed. It is so easy for people to cause mischief like this, and maybe the headline should have read "Tesco Victim Of Hoax Tree Rumour". I find it strange that my neighbours half a mile North of me had no complaints about Tesco opening there. Being that Summertown is hardly the appropriate place for them, and we already have M&S and a large CO-OP. Marston DOES need this shop and the jobs it will bring, and other shops will benefit from the added footfall, because if they are half decent businessmen they will stock the things that Tesco do not. I fear for the future (although I won't be here to see it) as it now seems fashionable amongst many types of people to object to nearly everything these days, from Housing to Shops. Eventually companies will get sick and tired of the hassle, and we will have no local services, only out of town superstores. We should welcome Tesco et-al investing in the heart of our communities, because without them, in ten or twenty years we will have nothing left. Just look at Jericho, in my childhood every corner had a Pub, Butcher, Grocer, and on Walton St shops that were all useful for everyday shopping and more, now look at it, nearly all have closed in Jericho itself, and Walton St is as useful as an Ashtray on a Motorbike.

These trees will mysteriously disappear one day. They may be 'accidentally' cut down (as has happened in the past) or perhaps hit by a lorry or Tesco delivery truck.

Once there down there's not a lot anyone can do and Tesco are well aware of that.

If the people of Marston have "accidently" cut the trees down in the past as you state, then they are hardly in the position to point fingers.

It does explain why the trees don't look 60 years old though.

I wonder if Mickie realises that when the unit was a public house, it would have had regular deliveries by brewery vehicles (far heavier than Tesco lorries) and if it sold food, daily deliveries by Brake or 3663 and the dairy.

Don't worry SId, as far as I can tell Ken is not a councillor although he may have been once. Surprisingly this is one of his more intelligible posts. And Peter is just being his usual snobbish self.
