Dancers from Oxford’s estates will be popping and locking their way to France next year to prove themselves at an international dance competition. But the youngsters from Blackbird Leys and Barton first need to raise £5,000 to make the trip. Despite only competing since March, dancers at the Messy Jam dance school have amassed more than 300 trophies between them. And this year, groups MJ BlackOut and MJ Krupt have won places at both the World and European Street Dance Championships. Messy Jam started with just six dancers in 2004 and is based in Blackbird Leys. It teaches various styles of commercial and street dance to 150 youngsters. BlackOut, Krupt and a third team MJ Fury have come at least second or third in national competitions since March. The World Championships will be held in Blackpool next month and the European Championships at Disneyland, Paris, in April. Principal and dance teacher Ellisha Peart, 28, whose sister Shanice competes, said: “This is a huge thing for the dancers, some of them have never been abroad. We actually qualified for the competition in Paris this year, but there’s no way we could have got the money in time. “A lot of the children come from single-parent families and it’s hard to get the money together. We’d love for the communities to get behind us and make sure we can compete next year.” About 25 dancers would be making the trip to Paris and fundraising for the trip will start immediately. Four dancers from MJ Fury also represented Cheney School and were second in the East of England national schools’ competition.
