A trip down memory lane

The Plain at night in November 2011 and April 1938 The Plain at night in November 2011 and April 1938

OURS is a vibrant city that is always changing, but today we’re having a nostalgic bit of fun merging the old with the new of Oxford.

We’ve taken some of our favourite old photographs and sent our photographers out to recreate them in the modern day, before graphic artist Mel Costello merged them together.

The image of Cornmarket and St Michael at the Northgate Church show one aspect of that changing face.

On one side we have today’s line of national chains, such as HMV, Orange and Snappy Snaps and opposite are the independents from 1885.

You can also see the evolution of time in our shot of High Street.

An Airline bus from 2011 is almost transforming into one in a photograph dating from the First World War.
