Band turns back time

THEIR fans are more used to MP3s and CDs, but one Oxford band are about to become the first in 90 years to release a record on wax cylinder.

The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band will release a two-minute phonographic wax cylinder of a special mix of their song Greg’s Greats Record Shop next month.

Lead singer Stuart Macbeth, pictured left, with Shellac Collective DJ Greg Butler, said: “Wax cylinders haven’t been in production now for about 90 years. We’re playing the record on a 1905 Edison phonograph so the plan is when we play Bestival this summer, we’re making DJ decks out of two phonographs.”

Only 25 copies of the cylinder have been produced. The song will not be released on any other format. The band will play two concerts to celebrate its release on April 19 – at the Nambucca in London that day and the Jericho Tavern in Oxford on April 20. Picture: OX50927 Damian Halliwell
