ELECTIONS 2012: Night starts with three shock results

ELECTION night in Oxfordshire has kicked off with three significant results.

Independent Mick Haines, a longtime community campaigner, has won Marston off Labour in the Oxford City Council elections.

Mr Haines won 877 votes, beating Louise Upton, who polled 636 votes.

It had been a good week for Ian Hudspeth, who last Thursday was voted in as leader of the ruling Conservative party on Oxfordshire County Council.

He will replace Keith Mitchell later this month.

But tonight he has lost his West Oxfordshire District Council seat to Liberal Democrat Elizabeth Poskitt.

And there was further bad news for the West Oxfordshire Tories as Labour's Duncan Enright took Witney East.

Also CONGRATULATIONS to Duncan Enright and Andrew Coles. People are getting fed up with not only this coalition government but with the Tory dominated district council and in particular the CLR fiasco which most people in Witney do NOT want.

Many people I know are fed up with the CLR fiasco but only because they feel the road should have been built many years ago as agreed by our elected representatives at the time. Instead of this, a very successful campaign waged by a non elected group has used every trick in the book to delay the project so that it may well not be completed at all.
The Council was Tory dominated because that is who got the votes, that may not be the case after this election due to dissatisfaction with national politics but we will see.

Duncan is the only councillor who has had the courage to oppose the Tory juggernaut over their ridiculous blinkered views regarding their pet white elephant, the Cogges Bypass....

A well deserved win and it is good to see that WODC is no longer a one party council. Tories lost 5 seats last night - largely due to local issues, I suspect.

Perhaps Tory councillors on WODC will now feel able to vote as their electorate wish, rather than meekly following the party whip.

Barry Norton's accusation of collusion are absurd. The truth is that people are fed up with the behaviour of WODC and have sent them a clear wake-up call.

Lots of people in Witney DO want this road. At least 50% of the people I speak to on this subject want it built.

Hi Rich, neither of us has conducted a poll in Witney so we are both relying on what we perceive to be people's views on the building of the road. My statement is based on the strong objections stated at the enquiry into the road, the many posters in the town, the people I talk to and of course the fact that people have voted for candidates who oppose the road. This road will NOT stop traffic congestion but just move it to another part of Witney, there are flooding issues and it will cost £20 million. I suggest that if you want to live in a town built for cars that you move to Swindon or Milton Keynes as they will probably be more to your liking.

Don't think so.

41 out of 49 WODC seats look very blue to me.

What are the figures for the Witney as a whole? Ie The Witney seats and how many actual votes were cast for each candidate?

1) The CLR has had planning permission twice before. On one occasion OCC couldn’t build it because they had insufficient funds, and on the second occasion they simply ran out of time on their 5-year planning permission! So we’re ALL fed up with the CLR saga!
2) Our elected representatives stood for many policies, not just the CLR. In fact the CLR was not mentioned in many of the pro-CLR candidate's campaign material. So it would be wrong to assume that a vote for them was necessarily a vote for the CLR.
3) Our campaign against the CLR has been totally within the laws of our democracy. Pressure groups are an important part of this country’s freedom of speech and, of course, anybody could have set up a campaign in opposition to us/for the CLR.
4) The current planning permission for the CLR which OCC granted itself expired on April 7th 2012. OCC has had THREE YEARS in which to prepare for this road, yet once again they’ve failed to follow the required procedures and their planning permission has, by their own admission, lapsed.
5) Your last line seems to say that the reason the Conservatives polled badly in Witney this week is because of national politics. Well maybe the reason they polled well in previous years was also because of national politics, and not because of any desire by their electors for the CLR.
You can’t have it both ways!

This is an interesting question with a revealing answer....although you can prove anything with statistics!

In the 2011 District Council elections, in the 5 Witney wards, the Conservatives polled 51.5% of the vote, Labour 27.8%, Green 11.6%, LibDem 5.6% and Ind 3.5%.
However, the Conservatives won all 5 seats.

In the 2012 District Council elections, the Conservatives polled 47.6% of the vote, Labour 38.9%, LibDem 3.7%, Green 9.7%.
So although the Conservatives only polled 47.6%, they still claimed 60% (3) of the 5 seats.
