Karen Nelson
The pain of walking 100km will be nothing compared to what Karen Nelson’s mother-in-law goes through every day.
That is what will spur on the mother-of-two as she tackles the London to Brighton Challenge where competitors can walk, run, cycle or crawl the 62 miles from Richmond Park to the coastal city.
Mrs Nelson, 36, hopes to raise £600 for charity Cancer Research as her mother-in-law Yvonne Nelson is battling the disease.
Mrs Nelson, pictured, of Almond Road in Bicester, said: “I will be going through less than my mother-in-law who has cancer at the moment.
“I have done fundraising for the British Heart Foundation after my dad had a triple bypass in 2010.
“Having seen Yvonne fight breast cancer and do so well, it was so upsetting for everyone when we found out it had come back. It’s a wicked illness.
“I felt I had done my bit for BHF and wanted to do something for Cancer Research because so much still needs to be done.”
Mrs Nelson’s sons Oscar, three, and Finley, one, and husband Marc will cheer her along the route, which she hopes to complete in under 20 hours.
Her mother-in-law, a 67-year-old former Bicester Sports Centre receptionist, beat breast cancer in 2010.
But last year the cancer returned. She underwent an operation at a specialist centre in Basingstoke, in February, and is now recovering at home in Bicester, but treatment is ongoing.
