When and why did this dehumanising phrase surface?

The lady that died in this horrific accident was a family member of mine...She was an absolutely fantastic caring person who will be truly missed :( RIP :'(

Tracie.E, I share in the collective expression of sorrow for your awful loss, but hope you will come to recognise that xjohnx was voicing an entirely legitimate concern that journalists sometimes adopt the (lazy) shorthand of copying the bureaucratic language used by the police and other emergency services, and forget that behind the bare words lie human tragedies; in this case, not just your own family's, but also the anguish of the family and friends of the young man who is apparently struggling for his life in Bristol. xjohnx's reaction was, it seems to me, one of true compassion. I have little doubt that his compassion extends to you and your family. But he may also have felt that the reporting in this respect was suitably respectful, whereas he clearly felt (and I share his view) that the formulation used in this instance to describe another of the victims was inappropriate. Words matter at such times, and this young man's family may have appreciated the fact that a caring memberof the public should have taken the trouble to gently chide Tom Jennings for his rather clumsy choice of words on this occasion. Peace be with you, and may you find solace and comfort in your family, rather than allowing yourself to be angered by perceived insensitivity - after all, that was precisely what xjohnx was seeking to avoid...

I am just thanking the LORD that she didn't kill any one else. How many innocent people could have been killed if the petrol station had exploded. I hope the police will do a full investigation into this, and find the cause of this. We could be looking into a mass death situation here. A lady lost her life in tragic circumstances, but (and I am not insinuating anything) it could have been far worse. And why did she lose control and smash into a petrol station. We must wait for the police alcohol/drugs result first before jumping to conclusions.

P.S. My thought and hopes are with the young French Lad who was only doing his job, and is now in a life or death situation through no fault of his own. None of you above even gave him a thought, shame on you.

I am just thanking the LORD that she didn't kill any one else. How many innocent people could have been killed if the petrol station had exploded. I hope the police will do a full investigation into this, and find the cause of this. We could be looking into a mass death situation here. A lady lost her life in tragic circumstances, but (and I am not insinuating anything) it could have been far worse. And why did she lose control and smash into a petrol station. We must wait for the police alcohol/drugs result first before jumping to conclusions.
As you along with others on here are so concerned about the language used in the report maybe you should consider your own vocabulary and the offence you may cause with your post! The 'she' that you refer to instead of lady, was a close personal friend of mine for 18 years as well as a wife, sister, aunty, daughter and god-parent. As you say the circumstances are tragic but for all of those who have been affected by this accident. You say that you 'do not want to insinuate anything' or 'jump to conclusions' and yet you write of 'the police alcohol/drugs result'. Why would you say such a thing????? You do not know my friend or anything about her because if you did you would know that she has never touched drugs in her life and has also never driven after drinking alcohol. Please get your facts straight before posting on here. Mindless innacurate comments can add further hurt to an already distressing situation!!

I think you should be ashamed of this post. As a pupils of stoddies my and my peers feel deeply hurt and sad over your comment, how could you be so insensitive ? your comment makes her seem like a bad person , you refer to other members of the public as innocent, as if she is not!? if you had half a brain cell you would look further into the case before you post such insensitive and small minded coments that only further the hurt and pain that stoddies family, my peers and i have endured in the last few days. if you had looked further you would have found that the road had recently been resurfaced and that gravle chips had been put down because the road had been sweating under the hot weather, which local residents say is the most likely cause of te incident, not alcohol or drug use as you rudely insinuated in your post, though i think you redeem youself in your second post as not alot of atension is being paid to the young boy that was hurt in the incident, me and my peers here would like to give our hopes and thoughts to his family and to the familys of anyone else hurt in the tragic accident.

Tracie E. I am the father of Emma the young lady trapped in her car after this terrible and tragic accident. I find myself grieved after reading some of the comments posted on here and the lack of compassion towards the family and friends of Ms Stodart. Does Dr Bob know something that we don't? Was he the doctor at the scene? Tragic accident, condolances and I hope the kid is ok.

"Doctor Bob is my hero " is making assumptions that should not be made. Tragic accidents happen all of the time, and to to say "thanking the LORD that she didn't kill any one else" is the most heartless thing you can say when a situation like this occurs...
Julie was a childhood friend of mine and always was, and will continue to be one of the most genuine, kindest people I have ever met....
The investigation will not turn up any evidence to say otherwise...
It was a tragic accident, due to road surface and conditions (as has been reported since) and sadly has taken the life of one person, and nearly the life of another...
Respect is what is needed, not troll-like comments from someone who does not know what he is talking about....
