Three generations to join charity race
LAUREN Mason will be the third generation of her family taking part in this year’s Oxford Race for Life.
And with the big day drawing close, she wants you to sign up too.
Race for Life will be creating a sea of pink throughout the city centre and University Parks, on Sunday, July 15, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Last year, 6,318 women took part in the event in Oxford and raised £360,870.
This year, organisers want 6,500 women and girls to put their best feet forward and help raise £366,015 for vital research. But with only 4,846 signed up so far, the race is on to swell the numbers.
Lauren, 16 from Chilton, near Didcot, will be walking with her mum Lucy, 41, and her grandmother Lin Hall, 65, from Blewbury, The trio, who have taken part in Race for Life several times before, will be joined on the day by family friends Erin Fullarton, 13, and Eleanor Haynes, nine.
Didcot Girls’ School pupil Lauren said: “We have been doing Race for Life as a trio for quite a few years now and we love it. There is such a great atmosphere.
“We walk it together and really enjoy ourselves. Plus we know we are doing something that is raising money for a really great cause – finding a cure for cancer.”
Lin also works as a volunteer at the Cancer Research UK charity shop in Didcot. She said: “I’ve had close friends lose their lives to cancer and know of lots of others who have battled with it too. I think we should all do what we can to raise money to help find a cure and Race for Life is a really fun and uplifting way to do it.”
The ladies are now busy collecting sponsorship for their walk and hope to swell the hundreds of pounds they have already raised.
Race for Life is non-competitive. Women can choose whether to walk, jog or run the 5k route. Most are able to walk 5k in an hour.
All women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.
