A man suspected of driving off without paying for petrol in Banbury is being sought by police.

Officers have released a CCTV image in an attempt to trace the man who drove off from Sainsbury’s in Oxford Road on April 24.

The motorist had filled up a Honda Civic — registration plate K857 TCS — with £40.03 of fuel.

Pc Lucy McDonagh said: “We have traced insurance details of this vehicle but have not located the man at any of the registered addresses.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

It should not be that difficult for the police as the car has a big number plate on the front giving all details. If the police cannot find that, no wonder they can't find those that break into our houses and cars.

The article does say the man was not found at any of the registered addresses but the owner should know the driver unless the car was stolen.

OMG !!!! yes its a crime but hardly the most awful of crimes. this crime has been going on for years and years, since petrol pumps were invented - he's a cheeky -----r, not a murderer, child molester, rapist or bank robber - no firearms were used, hardly a priority !!!!

is the insured man the registered owner? if not, arrest the registered owner, unless he gives details for the driver. thats what happens in speed camera cases. no, it is not the most heinous of crimes, but it is theft, and that is what puts up prices in shops!!

Nobody drives off without paying at the unmanned forecourt at AsDa, Wheatley. They also have the cheapest fuel prices in the area, I wonder if the two are linked.

Would it be such a bad thing to pay for fuel before we actually put it in our cars? We had to do this when on holiday in America several years ago. It would certainly stop people doing this.

Impossible to drive off without paying at Asda in Wheatley. The reason it is so cheap is that it is UNMANNED i.e. no overheads.....

Theft doesn't really drive the costs up as companies such as this have insurers to reimburse them. Unless it is the high wages of the directors that you are talking about? That just amounts to daylight robbery!

Why don't they just automatically bill and fine the registered owner, as they were the ones who gave permission to this person to drive the car, unless they were driving themselves...

That way, the fine gets paid, and very little police time is wasted.

I remember filling up recently, not sure where it was, but you had to pay before filling up, so some garages are waking up to the idea :-)

He's probably moved house and not informed the DVLA. They've got to find him to prosecute.

My father, and my brother have both been victims of plate cloning. My brother was charged with driving off without paying fore fuel; (un)luckily he'd been in a RTA the day before and his car was held by the police as evidence - a perfect alibi. My father was told by the traffic police that stopped him in Lancashire that the law governing replacement number plates was now so flawed that anyone can obtain sets of number plates without showing a V5. The law has broken down because of the dishonesty of a small minority of people in the motor trade - so many people have access to the equipment that makes the number plates that the law is now impossible to enforce. So this sort of appeal is a last gasp ; I'm sure the police will have attempted to prosecute the registered keeper.
