A RARE first edition of Samuel Beckett’s novel Murphy has been sold for £12,000 at an Oxfordshire auction house.
The book was put up for sale by Oxfam after it was donated to the charity's bookshop in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
Murphy was the first novel by the Irish author and dramatist, published in 1938.
The book sold at Bonhams, in Shipton-on-Cherwell, is one of only 1,500 copies printed and one of the few known to have survived.
