For the fifth year, Oxford Playhouse is bringing the world-famous Shakespeare’s Globe to perform in the heart of Oxford. Hamlet will play in the Old Schools Quadrangle at the Bodleian Library from Tuesday until July 26.
Learning his father, the king, is dead, Hamlet returns home to find his uncle married to his mother and installed upon the Danish throne. At night, the ghost of the old king demands Hamlet avenge his “foul and most unnatural murder”.
Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent actions, tragic depth and wild humour, Hamlet is the fullest expression of Shakespeare’s genius.
The magical setting of the Bodleian Library Quadrangle should captivate the audience’s sense of wonder as a handful of travelling players breathe new life into this favourite tragedy.
Directed by the artistic director of the Globe, Dominic Dromgoole and Globe regular Bill Buckhurst, Hamlet is sure to prove popular. Early booking is recommended.
Tickets, priced at £18, are available from the box office on 01865 305305 or at www.oxfordplayhouse.com
