They might not be much use in the current climate but a series of folding fans have gone on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
The decorative fans from China and Japan have been long used to keep people cool and were symbols of status and identity. Many are decorated with paintings or calligraphy.
Unity Coombes, from the Ashmolean Eastern Art Study Centre, said: “I hope lots of people will come along to see this display. We’re showing stunning fans from China and Japan, decorated with summery plants, insects and water creatures. Many are miniature masterpieces.”
The free exhibition runs at the Beaumont Street museum until October 7. You can also view it online by clicking on the link.
