Lorry crash shuts Barton slip road for six hours
9:50am Saturday 1st September 2012 in News
The overturned lorry
A LORRY toppled over and crushed the bonnet of a car at Headington’s Green Road Roundabout.
The crash led to the Barton slip road being closed for nearly six hours while recovery work took place.
The collision, which happened at 7.40pm on Thursday evening, involved a blue VW Golf, below right, a white Mercedes lorry and a silver Nissan Primera.
Elaine Lanighan, 50, from Kidlington, saw the accident happen as she was waiting to join the roundabout from the ring road.
She said: “It was quite shocking. We were waiting to exit the ring road and the blue VW was waiting to exit Barton.
“As the lorry came round in the second lane and was going towards London, a car came out of nowhere really fast in the outside lane and went between the lorry and the pavement.
“The lorry swerved and in slow motion we saw it fall. The driver in the blue VW reversed and it ended up just clipping his car.”
Police officers, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene and the lorry driver freed himself from the cab by kicking out the glass.
It was not until about 1.30am that police left the scene.
South Central Ambulance has confirmed it took one patient to the John Radcliffe Hospital but could not give any details about them.
Thames Valley Police said there were no significant injuries and no-one was arrested.
