GOLFERS teed off to raise thousands for a charity “close to their hearts”.
Organised by Bicester-based family firm GDT Fire Alarms, about 70 golfers took part in a tournament at Bicester Golf and Country Club last month.
The group raised a total of £4,100 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of Bob White, whose son Dave is the managing director of GDT Fire Alarms.
Mr White, who lived in London and died last year after a battle against cancer, had been supported by nurses from the charity.
His granddaughter Leanne Lovegrove, who works at the firm, said: “We organised this day to raise money for the charity Marie Curie as this charity is close to our company’s heart.
“The day was a great success and we have had so much positive feedback from people that attended.
“My grandad was looked after by Marie Curie nurses at the end of his life. After he died we set about raising as much money as we can for Marie Curie.”
On the day there was a raffle, auction with prizes including a flight, holiday and golf days, and a putting competition.
It was the second year running the company, which funded the event, raised money for the charity. Last year’s event raised more than £2,000.
Marie Curie community fundraiser for Oxfordshire Shir Hunt said: “We are delighted that Dave and his wife Angie decided to support Marie Curie Cancer Care again this year.
“The money raised from their golf day will enable the nurses to continue to provide end-of-life care in patients’ own homes.
“This year more than ever we are looking for support locally to help raise funds, so if anyone is interested in finding out more we would be happy to hear from them.”
