WITNEY will host a new rock festival in The Leys next year to showcase local musicians and bands.

Witney Town Council, which owns the site, gave its backing at a leisure and recreation committee meeting on Monday night.

It hopes the event, expected to attract 3,000 people, will continue the positive vibe created by the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in The Leys earlier this year.

The free one-day event will form part of the Witney Music Festival, a celebration of West Oxfordshire music held at pubs, schools and churches throughout the area in April.

Co-organiser Derek West said: “We are absolutely delighted.

“We want to create a festival feeling in The Leys, with a big stage and great sound coming off it, and give youngsters a really good place to play. It has a real potential to carry on the feelgood factor from this year’s events.

“Witney has got a terrific thriving community and that is something we do not want to lose. This will help bring the community together.”
