Children urged to take the plunge with 'learn to swim' classes

SWIMMING schools in Oxford hope to recruit new members following the Olympic summer.

Oxford City Council pools at Barton Leisure Centre, Blackbird Leys Pool, Ferry Leisure Centre and Temple Cowley Pools and Fitness Centre claim to offer a comprehensive learn to swim programme.

Students are continually assessed and can work towards Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) certification and badges.

Head swim teacher at Ferry Leisure Centre Kim Brady said: “Swimming is not just a fun and effective form of exercise, it’s an important life skill that we would encourage everyone to learn.

“Our ASA-recognised swim school makes learning to swim easy and enjoyable and is suitable for all ages and abilities, so it’s never too late to start.”

City board member for sports and parks Mark Lygo said: “I am pleased that we offer these sessions at our swimming pools – nearly 1,000 children already take part in swim school in Oxford – but I would encourage all parents to make sure that their children learn to swim.

“Swimming an important life-saving skill to have.”
